The Massey Schmidt Harper Group is a leading wealth management team located in Houston, Texas. We work with ultra affluent clients to develop strategies and services that reflect their particular goals and opportunities. We differentiate our approach by bringing a highly tailored mindset to each client. We look to address the wealth management needs of the whole client: his or her family members, business considerations, legacy desires and philanthropic interests. Our team harnesses our experience and know-how to advance client interests across multiple facets of wealth. We provide not only investment management, but trust and estate planning services, cash flow analysis, liability strategies, insurance analysis, concierge services and family seminars. We advise families and family offices drawing on our network of contacts throughout the Southwest. As members of the Private Banking Investment Group at Merrill Lynch we enable clients to access the expansive resources of the firm all the while fostering an environment that is personal and discreet.

Our Emphasis on Estate Planning Services

We work exclusively with ultra affluent families so we are attuned to the issues and opportunities that affluence can pose. We emphasize the value of estate planning services to long term wealth preservation and cross-generational wealth. Quite simply, significant wealth is different. By taking proactive steps to transfer wealth in an efficient and tax-sensitive manner families can effectively retain more of their wealth amplifying its impact on future generations. Our client engagements begin by developing detailed wealth transfer strategies. We have long term relationships with an extensive network of trust and estate planning specialists. Together we pursue cohesive strategies that prioritize a family’s long term financial outlook sensitive to the tax and philanthropic opportunities that affluent families face.

Our Focus on Efficient Investing

Investment management is a key driver of client value. We have significant experience in the capital markets not only in traditional investments, but also in alternatives. We are highly selective investors prioritizing fee containment, liquidity and efficiency. We oversee a number of money management strategies that are designed to pursue specific client goals; we also create customized portfolios to reflect the nuances of each client. Our investment perspective is detailed and informed. We delineate a client’s risk threshold, timeline, goals and preferences integrating this information into our asset allocations. We use index funds as appropriate gravitating toward their innate efficiency and cost effectiveness. We also monitor and review client portfolios assessing their alignment with a client’s life, wealth and legacy objectives.

Some or all alternative investments may not be suitable for certain investors. Certain alternative investments carry significant risk and are not subject to the same regulatory oversight as mutual funds and other traditional investments. For these reasons, access to alternative investments may be limited to investors who are designated as sophisticated, high-net-worth investors..

Our Knowledge of Defined Contribution Investing

We have significant experience in advising Defined Contribution Plans about their investment offerings. We work closely with 401(k) investment committees to delineate their retirement plan features and streamline construction and maintenance of these plans. As a designated Defined Contribution Investment Consultant (DCIC) within Merrill Lynch we are one of approximately 50 teams that offer monitoring and fiduciary services in this area. Our goal is to help clients provide plan participants with the tools and education they need for satisfying retirements. We are particularly skilled in staying ahead of industry trends while helping committees satisfy their fiduciary obligations. Our decades of experience in this realm align well with our work with affluent clients and families; our regular analysis of opportunities in the capital markets combined with our innate sensitivity to cost containment advances our initiatives with both client groups.
